Il nitrato è il prodotto finale della decomposizione dell’ammoniaca da parte dei batteri nitrificanti presenti nel filtro; non è tossico per i pesci, concentrazioni elevate di NO3 possono tuttavia a lungo termine ridurne la crescita o le capacità riproduttive.
Indirettamente, il nitrato può causare problemi di alghe poiché il nitrato è uno dei nutrienti chiave per alghe e piante.
In acqua dolce si consiglia una soglia limite di 50 mg/l.
